Frustrated with your current high school writing curriculum? Have your students almost given up on writing? Do your students reach for the tissue box when you say, "Write an essay"? Do you worry they won't be ready for high school or college writing? Do they say they think of things to write but can't write them down? No need to panic. Welcome to THE POWER IN YOUR HANDS: WRITING NONFICTION IN HIGH SCHOOL, a course that equips your students with all the essay structures, writing tools, and proofreading skills they'll need for their future writing life. With over 100 daily lessons and complete instructions for 22 essays and reports, this is a complete course students will enjoy--or not dread. And, more good news: the course almost teaches itself. Really. The course is perfect for writers of any experience, whether skilled or unskilled, reluctant or eager. The text begins slowly so beginning students can catch up; then it smoothly merges them with their age-mates. Advanced writers will appreciate the Digging Deeper lessons. This TEACHER'S GUIDE allows you to be as involved as you care to be in your students' writing class. Answers to all the daily lessons are included, along with many student and professional essays. Included in the TEACHER'S GUIDE is a grading section to aid you in grading those essays once they start coming--and they will come, now that students finally understand how to write introductions, conclusions, and everything in between. Each assigment includes a specific checklist; all checklists are included in this guide. Also in the TEACHER'S GUIDE is the 14-Minute Power Surges, a fun program of daily writing prompts geared to interest even the most reluctant writers. This program is similar to Sharon Watson's 10-Minute Writing Plunges found in JUMP IN, her popular middle school writing curriculum published by Apologia Educational Ministries. The course contains some Christian-based content. No prerequisites needed.

Sharon Watson is the author of WRITING FICTION [IN HIGH SCHOOL] and Apologia Educational Ministries’ JUMP IN, a popular writing curriculum for middle school students. She began her writing life with snappy one-liners, notably, "I Hate Math!!!" gouged into the top of her fifth-grade math homework. In a junior high English class, she read The Scarlet Letter but could not figure out what Hester's "A" stood for. This has given her empathy for students stumbling through school and trying to make sense of their writing and English classes, and she loves finding ways to make difficult writing tasks and concepts accessible to students. Sharon homeschooled her children for 18 years and teaches high school composition, fiction writing, and literature to local homeschool students and in all-day workshops. She and her husband live near Indianapolis, Indiana, and have three grown children and two grandchildren. Visit her website featuring FAQs for students and teachers, along with weekly writing prompts for high school and middle school students, at www.WritingWithSharonWatson.com.
