9781477555651: Confessions of a Vegetable Lover

What is it like to grow your own food?

Do you want to start a vegetable garden, but you're not sure what you're in for? Or maybe you already have a few vegetable gardening years under your belt, and you're looking for someone who understands you?

Either way, you've come to the right place.

In this collection of humorous essays, I share all the dirty details of my relationship with my vegetable garden:

  • Why I fell in love with Rutabaga
  • How I made a fool out of myself with a Chinese cabbage
  • How I have disrespected and misused all of radish-kind
  • How Potato and I almost split up over a lifestyle disagreement
  • Why Scarlet (runner bean) and I have failed to ever conceive a bean
And more!

But my confessions are good for more than just a laugh. Everything that I've learned about growing potatoes, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, squash, onions, peppers, radishes, kale, Chinese cabbages, and more is in this book.

Learn:
  • What is a short season tomato?
  • What are the easiest vegetables to grow?
  • What does it mean if your onions are flowering?
  • What is eating our vegetable plants?
  • Where are the seeds on kale?
  • What is kohlrabi and why should you care?
  • How do you cook a turnip?
  • How do you kill a potato beetle?
  • What the heck is a potato beetle anyway, and how do you know if you've got them?
  • Why should you grow zucchini when you've never bought it before in your life?

From the Author:

In the garden, everything is an experiment.

There are a lot of awesome books out there filled with everything you need to know to start a vegetable garden from scratch, or to solve any problem you might encounter in an established garden. If you're looking for a good reference book, I highly recommend anything published by Storey or Rodale. But if you want to start a garden and want some idea of what you're getting yourself into, or if you're looking to commiserate with a fellow gardener over the kinds of problems only we veggie garden lovers understand, then I hope you will enjoy my "confessions". They're a record of the problems I encountered, the mistakes I made, and the solutions I devised - one vegetable, one bug, and one incident at a time - with plenty of angst and laughter along the way.

My motto: Stick a seed in the ground and see what happens.

I began gardening in 2007 as an alternative to hoarding number ten cans of freeze-dried food in my cellar. From mid-spring until late fall, I eat produce primarily from my own garden. I prefer vegetables that grow like weeds, and weeds that can't outpace them. My yields are always less than I hope that they will be, but once I did grow a sweet potato the size of a football.

If you're still not sure whether or not my Confessions of a Vegetable Lover is for you, visit my author page (click on "visit Amazon's S.M.R. Saia page) and check out my book trailer, in which I reveal whether or not the legs on the cover of the book are really mine.

This book contains all the essays originally published in two volumes as Confessions of a Vegetable Lover and More Confessions of a Vegetable Lover.

From the Back Cover:

A garden can become an obsession. Like a great romance, it contains elements of both inevitability and insurmountable odds. Like a great love, it is both comfortably familiar and always surprising. In this slim volume of tell-all confessions, the author reveals how she lost the heart of her favorite eggplant, how she took advantage of her radishes' loyalty and affection, how her cucumbers avenged themselves, and more. Sprinkled with gardening insights and ideas, these humorous essays are a delight for anyone who has ever invested her heart into a garden.
