The XB-70 Valkyrie is the U.S. Air Force's first Mach 3 bomber. The aircraft is probably one of the most exotic in the world. The XB-70's history is also one of the most politically manipulated. With a new young president in office, the Air Force was at odds to save this program. JFK and his Defense Secretary, Robert McNamara were responsible for turning the bomber program into a last ditch effort research program. There were only two Valkyries that reached completion and the third was on the way when the program was canceled. The crash of the second XB-70 was a devastating blow to both the program and the Air Force's plans to see a Mach 3 bomber. This is a book on the history of the program. It is not a picture book to glorify just the aircraft. It is a hard, cold look at the politics involved with any major defense program and just what happens with tax-payer money when the party in the White House has other plans. While this program goes back to the 60s, the political maneuvers are as fresh in today's defense programs.
