Pony Trek In The Himalayas

Bashir introduced me to my new pony man. Rashid had little English so Bashir provided him with a small note - written in Hindi. Allegedly the memo, which he tucked into the pocket of Rashid's old suit jacket, was my ticket to safety. I was so nervous that six trips behind the rocks (a trekker's bathroom) were required before Rashid could hoist me onto Nadu - his little horse of 15 years. People talk about their moment of truth. This was mine! Let's just say, travel insurance would not be an issue if Madam Barbara disappeared from the trek. When I got home my daughter said, "Your pony man could just have said, 'What lady? I don't remember a lady called Barbara!"

Antarctic Adventure: Sailing To The Bottom Of The World

I felt it could be a good idea to just go out on the deck for a short while to breathe in the Antarctic air. I passed by them and exited through the heavy outside door. One hand on the ship at all times, I thought, as I passed along the deck on the starboard side. I hadn't been out that long when I thought it best to head back. Imagine my dismay when I discovered that the really heavy outside door with its huge metal handles, in the shape of an X, was closed and tightly sealed. I went to the windows of the lounge intending to wave my arms. There was no one there! At this point I was getting really scared! No one knew I was out on deck. I did not have a cabin mate to report that I had not come back. And, It was very, very, cold. What to do? What to do?

A Dream Within A Dream: The Elusive Northwest Passage

We returned to our ship just in time. Ice blew in and completely clogged up Terror and Erebus Bay. We were about to learn how powerful and terrifying Arctic ice can be! Barrow Strait tried desperately as the Livonia struggled through 10/10 multi year ice to Peel Sound. However, it was finally evident that we were stuck in the ice! Barbara Street Brechin's more than thirty exciting journeys to all seven continents have provided her with the intimate detail which she shares in the ten stories contained in The Journey Itself. Barbara is a retired school teacher who chose travel as her post retirement enterprise. The destinations she chose were not on the list of most tourists. Thus, places like Rajasthan, Antarctica, Canada's Northwest Passage, the Indian Himalayas and Tibet . . . were on her Bucket List. Her well kept diaries are the source of some of the stories which appear in her second book, The Journey Itself. Obviously non-fiction, so filled with actual details of some of her formidable adventures. However, her story about finally attaining a private audience with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, of Tibet, is filled with the emotion one feels in the presence of greatness.

From the Author:

The ten stories in my new book, The Journey Itself, are accounts of some of my most venturesome trips taken since 1980. It is my hope that you will enjoy "going along" with me as I travel the world. Most of them are inspired by my daily diaries, so you will experience exactly what I did as I made many of my dreams come true.
