Eventually, between the dreamer and the dreamed, reality fades, as Alison MacGiverson discovers on a field trip to Sonora, Mexico to study the Seri Indians. Attached to the Smithsonian Museum, Alison becomes immersed in the Seri myth, Came from Afar Man. Employing the mystical powers of a tribal elder, she travels back in time and embarks on an extraordinary journey with Viking explorers in the uncharted lands of the Americas. Drawn to Viking, Eirik Sigmusson, Alison's dreams reveal glimpses of a former life, but her love for Eirik lures her toward an ominous crossroads of life and death.

From the Author:
This book was written using historical references and researched facts, but also with a large dose of folklore and mythology. Though I've tried to stay faithful to the cultures of each time period, there is creative license taken which is appropriate with fiction.
The references to the Seri Indian culture reflect the research of A.L. Kroeber and W J McGee, dating from the early twentieth century. In that context, I've remained consistent with their findings, limited as their field notes were. The Seri language is both authentic and contrived.
The Norse in the book are from Iceland. Icelandic culture was not synonymous with other Viking peoples. A respect for the law and self-government was essentially particular to their island nation, and their gift for literature passed down orally in the famed Icelandic Sagas, a singular achievement of the time. At the beginning of the twelfth century, seafaring Norse of all lands were gradually turning away from forays of looting and mayhem to settle new lands and spread their agrarian way of life.
Keen explorers and ship builders, their exploits were far-flung. Most readers are familiar with the settlements of Greenland and Vinland as proof of the intrepid travels of the Icelanders. No one knows the extent of their explorations, but with a little imagination it's easy to envision them navigating uncharted waters and returning wiser for their journey. This is one tale created beyond historical fact, a fictional adventure as two different cultures entwine to tell a compelling story.
About the Author:
Susan Schaffner resides in the desert of Southern California. Her love of history spurs her writing and her interest in Native American and Viking cultures influenced the creation of this novel. The saga continues in, Return from Afar: A Viking's Fate.
