The time is September of 1919. Newlyweds, Jennie and James Culhane, end up in the small town of Campbells Crossing, North Carolina. Jennie is in pursuit of a nursing degree and finds the solution in the local clinic working for Doctor Sturgis in exchange for his instructing her towards that end. When she and James arrive at the clinic to check it out she is called on to assist the doctor in an amputation. She is disappointed with the doctor's attitude and is ready to give up the idea of working at the clinic, however they decide to give the clinic, and the doctor another chance. Intrigue encompasses them when a suspicious fire breaks out in Colonel Ruttledge's cotton mill in town and they are swept into the middle of a vendetta that almost takes James' life. Meantime, Jennie finds herself immersed in the fate of the clinic when it is made plain the clinic is about to fail. Jennie and James work together to help iron out all the difficulties. Jennie keeps her family, back home in Zionville and Sugar Grove, North Carolina, abreast of the happenings in Campbells Crossing. Regardless of whether you have had the pleasure of reading the first part of this 2-part series, you will thoroughly enjoy this engaging story about a newly married couple starting their life together. With impeccable writing by one of the best descriptive authors I have ever read, Ruth Layng transports us to a town of Campbell's Crossing in the post World War era. Each scene, each character is described with warmth and vivid detail. After only a chapter into the book you become so invested in the characters and their lives, it becomes difficult to put the book down until its conclusion. A thoroughly enjoyable read. I cannot recommend this book enough. - Cathy A. Morrow Children's Book Author and Poet
