9781478720799: Tasting It All: Tales and Recipes from a Restaurateur's Lifelong Journey of Food, Family, and Friendship.

Angela Mulloy discovered at a very early age that food brings people together. From her childhood as part of a large, extended Italian family, to a career immersed in cuisine, her journey spans a lifetime of passionate cooking--a lifetime of learning recipes, techniques, and culinary secrets. This book, which begins in Mulloy's grandmother's kitchen, takes the reader on that journey as she moved around the country and gravitated to the sides of a multitude of cooks--those who ran the gamut from young housewives and little old ladies to food writers, chefs, and culinary legends; those who taught her the secrets of their favorite dishes; and those who shaped her notions about food and the kitchen. Began as a collection of childhood memories, it progressed to what it is now: part quirky memoir and part recipe book sprinkled with a little history and a touch of nostalgia.

From the Author:

In this book, I have endeavored to present recipes that blend old classics with new twists on traditional themes. Some of them are tried-and-true creations from personal collections, some are modern recreations of early dishes, and some are traditional renditions of family favorites. All of them, however, have stories that endear the recipes to me. They reflect the influence of my family, the places I have lived, and the friends I have made along the way. My journey has taken me from New Jersey to California to Virginia to Florida, learning about foods from all parts of the country and many nations. These are the recipes I present here, which I have reworked and modified  to reflect today's methods and tastes

From the Inside Flap:

Tasting It All is about love:  Angela Mulloy's love for food and the cooks who prepare it. And it's about memories: her memories about the significant moments and significant people of her life. She weaves together delicious recipes with charming anecdotes of the places she lived and the people with whom she cooked and broke bread. What she recalls and savors is sometimes funny and sometimes poignant, but it is always endearing. Each vignette evokes the memory of an ingredient, a dish, a recipe. And each recipe, in turn, evokes the memory of a story about the person who taught her to prepare it. The stories recall good times and bad, places she loved and hated, situations of joy and sadness. Most of all, they recall the unforgettable people who taught her that food is the universal conduit, that the kitchen is the center of our existence, and that it is around the table that our differences come together.

By dinnertime, everyone had a story to share. The day was their script. The table their stage. The family their audience. Angela Mulloy discovered at a very early age that food brings people together. From her childhood as part of a large, extended Italian family, to a career immersed in cuisine, her journey spans a lifetime of passionate cooking-a lifetime of learning recipes, techniques, and culinary secrets. Began as a collection of childhood memories, it progressed to what it is now: part quirky memoir and part recipe book sprinkled with a little history and a touch of nostalgia. Mulloy writes with humor and warmth about the changes in her life-marriage, motherhood, career, feminism, divorce-and how food played a major role in each. Here, in this fascinating memoir, is a unique collection of stories about the people, places, and meals Mulloy encountered through the years. Told with her distinctive wit, they lend a flavor of the different cultures and cuisine, as well as the political and social climates of the 20th century. They recount the changing times, tastes, and traditions that span seven decades, and they share Mulloy s insights as she became a gourmet through evolution. Woven seamlessly throughout the text are mouthwatering recipes gleaned from family and friends-recipes that reflect a wide variety of cuisines that have followed her diverse life path. Uniquely and creatively presented, Mulloy s book is a culinary memoir that just begs to be devoured. Bookseller Inventory # AAV9781478720799
