About the Author:

Bles started her career very early. As a college freshmen at 18, her poem "At Dusk in Paradise" won first place in a contest sponsored by the editorial staff of Santa Isabel University's newsletter, The Isabelina, after which she became a regular contributor. Bles' English teacher had inspired her to write her first poem at 12, and she has been writing poetry ever since. Bles also writes prose, short stories, and non-fiction novels. Bles has long been recognized for her talent in music and performing arts. She won first prize at the tender age of five for her dramatic monologue in a literary competition sponsored by a major radio station in the Philippines. Bles has years of training in classical singing and was awarded a scholarship in vocal performance from the New World School of the Arts in Miami, Florida. She has a repertoire ranging from Handel and Mozart to Rachmaninoff and Faure, as well as American musical theater and contemporary crossover songs. Bles holds a Bachelor's degree in Nursing and has extensive experience in two clinical specialties, Mental Health and Addictions Nursing. After losing her first husband to cancer, Bles passionately sought refuge and has found healing in her artistic pursuits while raising three teenagers as a single parent. Bles currently lives with her husband with whom she travels to different cities all over the world to find the perfect home.

Without Rhyme: APoet's Story
Bles Chavez-Bernstein
Outskirtspress, 131 pages, (paperback) $13.95, 9781478735779
(Reviewed: November, 2015)

Bles Chavez-Bernstein's WithoutRhyme: A Poet's Story is a poetry collection that traces the poet's journey from her rural childhood to her adulthood in a new country. The poems reflect a yearning, sensitive, and harmonious attitude towards living. Lovingly rendered, the book features several charmingly simple black and white illustrations throughout that provide a visual for the poem on the opposite page.

A wise spirit and sense of balance exemplifies the collection, which is especially graceful and gentle in its apprehension of its everyday topics, such as love, loss, motherhood, and finding one's place in the natural world. Many poems contain earthy, sweet, domestic images, as in: " A pair of little hands/gripping my hem/six little feet eager to run/ on a grassy path..." and "The aroma of rice steaming/permeates  the modest kitchen' in the poem "Coming Home."
Often nature receives lyrical treatment. "Perfection" for instance, describes a metaphysical experience of nighttime sky-watching, ending on a note of wonderment: "At dusk,/ a giant moonrise/ sprinkles diamond lights/[...] I am floating in space!/ I see the blue of an endless dome [...] the sun glorifies space,/ priceless for its worth./ The same sun/ descends with its rays; splattered over my city/ in glorious crimson."

In addition to the glories of life, Chavez-Bernstein examines some of its difficult moments: one poem addresses the anger of her son suffers at the loss of his father; another titled "Caregiver," notes the struggles of someone fighting illness and the steady rhythm of patient care:" My hands are always free/When you need them/to set the clock of care,/ a meticulous regimen."

These are engaging poems, with a speaker who is sympathetic and relatable. While the language is not especially surprising and the form shows little variety, those wanting to connect with a poignant, almost innocent voice, will find a kindred spirit in these pages.

Reviewed by Samantha Coville for Readers' Favorite

Bles Chavez Bernstein opens her heart to the reader in Without Rhyme by sharing her own personal life story and the adventures it held. It starts with a young, innocent girl finding out who she is through love and heartbreak, and follows that girl through her life, moving to a foreign land and claiming it as home. It's the story of life, death, wisdom, stupidity, love, loss, joy, sorrow, being lost, and being found. And it's all told through poetry.

Let me get the inevitable negative comment out of the way to explain why this is a four instead of a five. While I must commend the author for opening the emotional door for us and allowing us to see her life with all of its flaws, her story is not overly ground breaking. I've heard of others who have lived a life similar to her own. However, hers is written through poetry that the others could never dream of matching. There's a beautiful rhythm here that flows like the emotions she works so hard to detail and convey. At points it is raw and so genuine that you almost feel them welling up in yourself as well. I don't think readers should come here looking for a unique story, but instead for a healing spiritual experience.

Without Rhyme is a perfect rainy day read to curl up with in solitude and meet someone who feels what you feel. And I recommend reading out loud to fully grasp the flow of this poetry that is so well done. Bravo!

Red City Book Review

Without Rhyme: A Poet's Story by Bles Chavez-Bernstein

A collection of approximately one hundred poems, Bles Chavez-Bernstein shares snapshot of her life from nearly every angle in Without Rhyme: A Poet's Story. The poems included in this book range throughout the entire spectrum of human emotions, covering those both triumphant and turbulent. The poet tells tales of her time as a young girl growing up in a small rural town, to moving and living in a foreign country quite unlike her own.The words on these pages reflect times of happiness and joy, but also at times cover moments of sadness and despair. Chavez-Bernstein writes in a passionate way, her words holding much weight. Whether it is pondering over the reunion with a potential lover in Where the Path Leads, allowing oneself to enjoy the goodness of nature in Somewhere Is Bliss, or remembering special times with family in the places where we grow in Oasis for a Child, the poet succeeds at creating atmospheric pieces that are sure to stick with the reader.

The addition of black-and-white line illustrations scattered throughout this book of poetry is a nice touch that further pulls the collection together. The poems here range in tone, but overall remain consistent in their voice and style, showcasing Chavez-Bernstein's poetic talent. Since the subject matter varies, there are poems for almost every type of reader. They are both romantic and melancholy, brooding and reflective. While the book will most likely appeal to women who are interested in emotional poetry, this is the kind of collection that can easily be enjoyed by anyone who connects with personal poetic narratives.
