A vivid portrait of the underground economy, immigrant smuggling, and a deadly family vengeance, aka Freight examines a modern tale of vengeance for a young man swept into the underground economies created by a rift between competing nations. It follows Chinese-American Shawn Yoon Soon, who is what is known in criminal lingo as a snakehead, an immigrant smuggler. As he navigates gangs, family conflicts, and federal politics, readers will see a visceral struggle for identity between the two worlds of his father's China and his mother's America.
The novel opens in China in the 1970s. His father Ji Yun Sun is the hard-driving owner of several mining interests, and his mother Annalise Livingstone is an intelligent Ivy League professor who speaks several languages fluently. In China, the couple conceives, only to watch their relationship unravel after Annalise defies an order to abort her baby and is expelled from the country. Annalise delivers Shawn in her hometown near Huntsville, Alabama. As a teenager, Shawn travels to China to meet his father and work in his mines only to tragically witness brutalities of working conditions there.
Drawn into the underground economy, he realizes a skill for smuggling immigrant workers into the United States. He allies himself to the Sianides, a gang of young Chinese malcontents at war with the BR, a rival Vietnamese street gang. As Shawn attempts to find purpose and to meet his and what he perceives as his family's needs, he fights to correct his wayward ambitions.
A dramatic novel of family bonds and criminal codes, aka Freight is a thrilling yet sobering account of a life in a mercenary economy spanning from the US to Mongolia to the heights of Western China.
