In their bid for reelection, President Obama and the Democratic Party have decided to focus their efforts on the "middle class". They want the government to do for the "middle class", what the government has done for African Americans. Some 80 years ago, with the "New Deal", democrats began to focus their efforts on improving the lot of minorities, and it continued with the "Great Society" of LBJ in the 1960's. Am I the only one who fears for the safety of the middle class? By any measure one choses to use, the African American Community, with the help of government, is failing: unemployment is higher at twice the national average; crime is rampant in our neighborhoods; our children lag behind in educational performance; our young men are more likely to be jailed, or killed; and the list goes on. Worse yet, as a voting bloc, we have been rendered irrelevant. Despite the disproportionate number of hardships that land on us in American society, and our overwhelming commitment to the Democratic Party, the Democratic National Convention will "focus on Hispanics (and) Clinton good times". It is not the focus on the Latin Community to which I object. Theirs is a voice that deserves to be heard (as does every voice in American Society). What I object to is the Democratic Party moving on before the task is done; their abandonment of the African American mission with so much work yet to be done. America cannot survive the Democratic Party doing for the middle class what it has done for African Americans. Without a robust middle class there is no America. Fear not; the solution for the middle class is the same as it is for African Americans: reclaim your group power. Salvation rests in self-sufficiency. Make politicians pursue, and be accountable, to you. It begins not with divisive rhetoric and name calling, but with constructive dialogue and consensus.
