After the loss of his wife, Charlie Kelly departs on a world tour to assuage his grief. He is convinced to start his tour in Japan, a place he hasn't seen in two decades, since he was stationed there while in the Army. Many old memories return, not the least of which, is the memory of the young Japanese teacher he once loved and lost. This romantic novel is filled with suspense, intrigue and tragic comedy. It involves romances discovered in the wake of sacrifices. Will the long lost prince and princess find each other and reunite? This book contains the elements of a spy novel. There is the intrigue of a cat and mouse chase. Are the private eye's intentions good or evil? A mystery is resolved in the end, as the characters do not realize how much danger they really were in from mobsters in hot pursuit. A central question posed is who has the right to judge others? This novel is also about the lives of two gifted individuals, an artist and a musician and the impacts they have on the lives they come into contact with. The author, Kenneth Fenter, draws on his experience living and working with the Japanese in Nagasaki as both a teacher and an artist. Gifted Hands is the fourth Novel for Kenneth Fenter. The first novel in this Series is The Ruin followed by The Bee Tree, Pivotal Times: The Freshman Class and then Gifted Hands. The main Character Charlie was a minor character in the first two books and a main supporting character in Pivotal Times. The character Keiko was also introduced in Pivotal Times.

From the Author:

My wife and two children lived in the Nagasaki area for two years from August 1977 through June 1980. After we moved back to Springfield Oregon, I continued my association with friends in the two towns of Nagasaki and Isahaya where we had lived and taught English for an additional three years. During those three years, I built and installed stained glass windows and lamps.
Much of the time that I spent back in Nagasaki was at the Nagai Youth Center run by a Catholic priest, Father Jose Aguilar. He had been in Nagasaki about 20 years by that time. He was a good-humored man and was instrumental in my starting the stained glass experiment.
The young missionaries and teachers who went to Nagasaki to work with the Japanese to improve their English speaking abilities gravitated to the Nagai Center and the wise counseling of Father Aguilar. In the evenings after I finished completing windows either for the center or for other customers in Nagasaki I and others gathered with Father Aguilar who regaled us stories and song.
My memories of those evenings and some of the young men and women that I met there found their way into the pages of the novel Gifted Hands: Saino no aru te
Why did I choose the main female character to be a koto musician? During the two years we lived in Isahaya, we as a family of four were four of the five Americans in the city of about 50,000. Our daughter Janelle was 9 and our son 12. Both were light haired. Both were sought out by neighbors and families of their classmates to come to their house to dinner and we were invited to come along. At one such dinner, I heard a recording of the okoto and fell in love with the sound. I made inquiries and was introduced to the mother of one of Janelle's classmates who hosted a koto teacher in her home every Saturday. To make a long story short, I began taking lessons and continued over the two years we lived there. I even brought a koto back to the states. However hadn't learned enough to continue without the help of the teacher.
When I wrote Gifted Hands, I wanted the reader to discover Japan along with Charlie and form first impressions that change and evolve along with Charlie's. It is a daunting experience going down into the hinterlands, as anyone who gets off the beaten track knows. Even the most self-sufficient person suddenly finds himself or herself suddenly at the mercy of the goodness of those around him or her until they get their feet under them.

Isahaya and Nagasaki is the setting for this Novel. He chronicled the five years he lived and did business in Japan in the series of books, An American Family in Japan.
