From the cotton fields of West Tennessee to the remote jungle landing strips of Vietnam, Hauling Trash is one man's story of hauling trash in C-130s in Vietnam. Also includes accounts of the author's experiences on C-141s and C-5As with "Mother" MAC. From the Author:
I started writing a memoir of my military service many years ago, but decided my story wasn't that important; it was the story of the troop carrier/tactical airlift mission that's important. However, after writing two books on the airlift mission - and after one of my buddies wrote his own book about his military experiences - I decided it was time to pick up where I'd left off a couple of decades ago and go for it. In this memoir I not only describe my Vietnam experiences in detail, I also devote several chapters to my experiences as a member of the first USAF squadron to operate the giant - and controversial - Lockheed C-5A Galaxy. A few chapters are devoted to the year I spent as a crewmember on C-141s at Robins AFB, Georgia. Throughout te book, I describe my experiences as I learned to fly then pursued my FAA ratings under the GI Bill, and how I became an accomplished aerobatic pilot. Included are several adventures in my pretty blue Bellanca Citabria. Much of the latter part of the book is also devoted to the social life I was finally able to start having when I was based at Clark AB, Philippines and got to know several members of the WAF squadron. Finally, after I returned to the US and was stationed at Charleston AFB, SC, I was able to have a fairly normal social life with young American women and male civilians.
