The Order of Idin has guarded the four realms of creation for all of living memory. Wielding the powers of the elements -- earth, fire, water, and air -- the Order polices the realms, guarding against rogue Elemental Magicians and ambitious war chiefs. But the Elementals are more than peace-keepers; in times of disagreement they are judges; in times of draught they are farmers, summoning storms, magically tilling the ground; and in times of plague and pestilence, they are Healers. Saela is one such Healer. Daughter of the late Vilara the Benevolent, the greatest Healer who ever lived, Saela is watched closely by her fellow Elementals and the folken they protect. When she returns from her first Fetching, where her Class (Arbiter, Warrior, Healer, or Mage) is decided, with a coal black Healer's wand, both her fellow Elementals and the folken rejoice. Here, they think, is Vilara come again. There's just one problem: Saela is no great shakes at Healing. And with the death of her parents in a car crash when she was seven, there's nobody Saela can turn to for help. She struggles through five long years of embarrassment, failing at even the simplest spells, until finally the day of her second and last Fetching has arrived. She will go into the Sha'kar Forest for her adult Healing wand, and then begin her future, bathed in mediocrity. But Saela doesn't find an Adept Healer's wand in the forest. She finds an ebony Mage's staff instead, and with that her life is changed forever. Very few people go into the forest as a member of one Class and return as a member of a different Class, and nobody has ever become an Adept Mage without first being an Apprentice Mage. Saela is the first in history, and as such she catches the attention of Anastae, Queen of Idintha. Under Anastae's tutelage, Saela takes to Magecraft like a fish to water. Following in the footsteps of her father, Samor Brightflame, who was a great and gifted Mage, Saela finds that her future isn't so bleak. Suddenly, her future is bright and full of potential. And then the realm of Idintha, Saela's home, is attacked. Saela is thrust into adulthood at a time of adversity and war. When Anastae discovers that the mysterious Shar'kai is threatened, she sends Saela and her friends off to the realm of Fara'din to find the Shar'kai and protect it. Saela thinks she is ready, and she will need to be ready, because before her adventure is over she will meet a man from her past, a dark and powerful Mage who has influenced the course of Saela's life more than she knows. Saela will turn to her friends for help...but her friends may not always be there.
