The author, James McLoryd, has been a band leader and business owner in the wedding industry for 22 years. Prior to owning a music agency he worked as a band leader for a large agency and learned the good, bad, and the ugly regarding band music. After opening his own agency he learned very quickly that having a good band was not enough to be successful. Large music agencies had the resources to "buy" work. They did this by giving money under the table to catering facilities and in return the caterer would recommend them. The large agencies were notorious for ripping off the uneducated public. It was very frustrating to have a great service that he didn't even get the opportunity to sell in some cases. While driving he heard a commercial for a clothing store. The ad said "an educated consumer is my best customer". This was the inspiration for this buying guide.
