He was initially trained as a journalist on a scholarship jointly offered by Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, USA, and the U.S. Department of State. This comprised assignments in American newspapers like the Portland Oregonian, Portland, Oregon, and The Patriot Ledger, Quincy, Massachusetts, attending White House press briefings and the United Nations General Assembly. He specialized both in news and feature writing before turning to historical research and book writing. In Canada, Sydney worked in the Quebecor Group, Bowes Publishers Division.
