He was born probably in the Italian city-state of Genoa in the mid-15th century. Around that time Genoa had lost almost all of its merchant markets and land possessions in the eastern Mediterranean. On the other hand it had many internal political problems as well as problems with its Italian neighbors (Milan, Florence). Generally speaking the city of Genoa declined in every aspect. It was at that time that Columbus following a difficult path arrived first in Portugal and then in Spain. After many adventures and a rather successful marriage he finally managed to be integrated at the Spanish nobility and later to hold some of the highest offices ever granted from the Spanish kings to non-Spanish citizens of their kingdom. The biggest and best-known achievement of Christopher Columbus was, after all, the crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. He was the first European of his time to achieve it in 1492 and hence it opened a new path to the "Indies", as he himself and many others believed by that time. The achievement of Columbus was huge, thus it enjoyed tremendous appreciation from his contemporaries. Indeed in 1539 someone wrote about him that "... there is nothing more honorable for our time or the time before us than the invention than the printing and the discovery of the New World...". Since then much more is written for the admiral: hymns, plays, novels, historical treatises, and recently many films, depicting almost every aspect of his life and work. All these has contributed more or less to turn Columbus into an absolutely fabulous figure. So with this book we are now trying to demystify the personality of the admiral. Also to highlight the real Christopher Columbus, the person who was honored with the title "First Admiral of the Atlantic Ocean". --------------------------- e-mail : firstname.lastname@example.org -------------------------------- Visit my WEB PAGE (www.thanoskondylis.com) and read even FREE e-books
