John Grant Allison served with distinction in the 1st Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and the British Special Forces, from 1959 through 1987. He recounts his boyhood in Scotland, and leadership lessons in the Boy Scouts, leading up to his military service in the jungles, deserts, mountains and cities of Malaysia, Borneo, Brunei, Aden, South Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Belize, Northern Ireland, West Germany, France, and the U. S. Over the course of his career, he was selected for advanced Arabic language training, and frequently worked with other countries' forces; he made it a policy to always be able to communicate in the local language. After retirement from the military, he moved to Napa, CA, starting a second career in security consulting, and served as operations manager at the Culinary Institute of America, Greystone in St. Helena. His world travels continue, including visits to Asia, Mexico, Australia, Great Britain, and Europe. John recounts tales of almost three decades of military operations; how he developed leadership skills; the friendships he developed throughout the world; and how his family was impacted. Since his second retirement in Napa, he has experimented with wine making, golfs regularly, and continues to promote Scottish heritage through the St. Andrews Society of San Francisco.
