For the last seven years, Jim and Mindy Phypers have been exploring the back roads and by-ways of rural Mexico and "boldly living where no American has ever lived before". All their lives they had dreamed of living simply and self-sufficiently and as close to the natural world as possible. As kids they loved animals and rural places, exploring and hiking. Before settling in Mexico, they built their own straw bale house out in the desert in Arizona. It had solar electric panels, a wind generator, solar hot water, and a rain-water collection system using the roof of their big greenhouse. They have created www.solarhaven.org which shows over 1200 visitors a day how to build with natural materials and generate their own power. Their present home in a tiny village in rural Mexico is small, rustic, and blends into the jungle that surrounds it. It is stuffed, however, with books, computers, and a small recording studio plus five dogs, four cats, and four tanks of tropical fish. Jim and Mindy are serious amateur musicians and have produced a music CD in Mexico, “Music for Relaxation Featuring the Recorder”, available at cdbaby.com.
