In Performance is intended for young people who are auditioning for both undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as professional productions and industry meetings. Featured are dynamic monologues from contemporary stage plays of the past 15 years, chosen from the point of view of a professional acting teacher, director, and casting director. Along with covering the basics of how to match the best monologue to the actor and how to approach the rehearsal and performance of the piece, the book provides a synopsis of each play, a character description, and a list of questions specific to each monologue that will direct the actor toward shaping a complex, honest, and thoughtful performance that has a strong emotional connection, a clear arc, and playable actions.

Mercanti was an assistant professor of acting and directing in the Theatre Arts Department at the University of Miami and has worked as a casting director for over fifteen years on numerous Broadway and Off-Broadway production shows, including the Kevin Kline revival of Cyrano de Bergerac and the 2013 Broadway production of Romeo and Juliet. He lives in New York City.

Review:

"JV was the associate director on Romeo and Juliet, and I found his insight on character development to be incredibly helpful. The man is a wealth of knowledge and artistry." --Orlando Bloom

"JV made the process so clear and focused for me. He helped me see things in a very direct and simple way. I owe my critical success in Jekyll & Hyde to JV putting me in the right place to tell the story every night." --Constantine Maroulis
