Shirin Samii was born under the regime of Reza Shah, founder of the Pahlavi dynasty and grew up under the reign of his son Mohamad Reza Pahlavi. The book begins with the abdication of Reza Shah and ends with the death of Mohamad Reza Pahlavi in exile in Egypt. In this book the author gives a personal account of her life from the age of 4 until the islamic revolution and the Shah’s death. The reader can follow the evolution of her thoughts and feelings from a young child enamored of the Shah, to an adolescent discovering the harsh realities of the Shah’s government, to a disillusioned adult who like many other Iranians went from admiring her king to despising him and his dictatorship. The reader will learn about the Iranian society in pre-revolution Iran, the source of some of the deeply entrenched feelings Iranians have toward the US and other foreign governments, the power of rumors that spread like wild fire, and the many lost opportunities for the Shah to reconnect with his people.
