9781481135900: Ember from the Sun

Anthropologist Yute Nahadeh stumbles upon the scientific discovery of the millenia: a tiny embryo in the womb of a 25,000-year-old Neanderthal, preserved in arctic ice. So begins a secret research. He implants the embryo in a surrogate mother, and a Neanderthal girl is born in our time. Named Ember, she is raised among the Quanoot Indians of Whaler Bay, Washington. Guided by a shaman who has waited for her return, pursued by the man of science who brought her to life, Ember is drawn to a place where no one else can go--where her ancestors, the golden-skinned people of her dreams, wait for her to set them free.

From the Author:

The Redemptive Power of Love

I'm a true romantic. Each of my novels expresses the same moral theme: Love (not power) is the only force that can render us fearless.

This also is a central theme of so-called "Romanticism"--the artistic, literary, and intellectual movement that began in Europe at the end of the 18th century and peaked in the 19th century, and included the works of Whitman, Emerson, and Thoreau. Another recurring idea that drove the Romantic Era is the revelatory wisdom and beauty of nature. My novels always explore the wonder and wildness, bliss and terror of the human body within the natural world ("Eros" writ with a capital "E").

My story about a Neanderthal girl, born today and raised among us, expresses the universal theme of the great need to accept and love ourselves as we are.

In addition to English it has been published in Japanese, German, Polish, French, Italian, Swedish, Dutch, Spanish, and Catalan.

Book Description Createspace, United States, 2012. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.With the clarity of a scientist, the wisdom of a shaman, and the passion ofa born storyteller, debut novelist Mark Canter brings to life a heroine asmemorable as Ayla in The Clan of the Cave Bear, and weaves a compellingtale of love and myth, redemption, and the powerful human urge forconnection.Ember Ozette is brought to life from a tiny embryo when a forensic scientistdiscovers a pregnant Neanderthal preserved for centuries in arctic ice.Keeping his research secret, and driven by motives much deeper than he can layclaim to, Dr. Yute Nahadeh implants the embryo in a surrogate mother, and aNeanderthal infant is born.Raised among the Quanoot Indians of Whaler Bay, Washington, Ember is a child ofthe present, as modern as those around her. She takes pleasure in her family, excels in sports, hikes in the woods that surround her home. Even so, herotherness is a source of great shame. What is the purpose of her extraordinarygifts--her power to heal, her uncanny perceptions, the vivid dreams thatdisturb her sleep? Her quest for answers is driven by visions of a band ofmysterious golden-skinned people--the last survivors of their race--who arefleeing genocide. Somehow, their rescue depends on her. But who are they, andwhy do they call to her, and where can they be found? In a climax as moving and suspenseful as any in recent fiction, Ember iscompelled to search for her ancestors. She doesn t fully understand the needto find them; only that it is as central to her as her beating heart. Hersearch is urgent, and dangerous, and as she struggles to unravel the mystery ofher past, the scientist returns with his own claims on her destiny. But likeall journeys undertaken withpassion, this one takes Ember both far from homeand deep into her own heart, to a fuller knowledge about the past, aboutherself, and about the meaning of dreams she has struggled all her life tounderstand.
