9781481186384: Will I Need Long-Term Care?: LTC Planning Guide and Workbook

There are a handful of Long-Term Care books and Long-Term Care Insurance books which have been published. Some explain Medicare and Medicaid in depth. Others include guidance in elder law issues, or in choosing a care provider or facility (aka "community"). Still others explain Long-Term Care Insurance exhaustively, down to the last industry-specific contractual clause. This book is aimed at those who have decided they need to plan ahead for eventual care, but want data: what is their risk, what does care cost where they live, what sources of funds do they have access to which will pay for care, etc. The book offers an even-handed approach; there is no attempt to coerce the reader into buying a product or service. This book is unique, first because of its primary purpose: to review every possible method of paying for Long-Term Care at some point in the future. It won't help you if you're currently caring for a family member, and it doesn't explain Medicaid, Medicare, or Long-Term Care Insurance in depth. It does give the relevant details of the governmental programs which help pay for care, and the private, insurance industry plans which help pay for care. It's also a resource for those who want to know if it makes sense to self-fund their care with cash or assets. Following the review of all sources of payment, etc., you'll find a workbook which will walk you through the number crunching related to setting a budget and creating a plan to pay for future Long-Term Care. The workbook is also unique. This is your opportunity to take control of this issue; make the best of it!

From the Back Cover:

'Worry is not preparation: Hope is not a good strategy.'

Many people walk through a Long-Term care situation with a parent or loved one, but somehow don't consider that the same thing could just as easily happen to them. If we live long enough, it is more likely than not that we will each need Long-Term care. For a 65 year old couple, there is a 91% chance that one of the partners will need long term care.

Have you provided care? Has someone provided care to you? Do you wonder what the risk is that you'll need care? Do you wonder what it costs where you live?

Do you wonder if you're eligible for VA benefits? Does Medicare or Medicaid pay for care? Where else can you find money to pay for care? Reverse mortgages? Life insurance or annuities? Life settlements? Viatical settlements? Should you pay for care with cash?

What about Long-Term care insurance? Has someone told you to buy it? Do you wonder how it works, what it costs, when to buy it, and which insurer you can trust?

This book walks you through the options for financing the cost of Long-Term care. The approach is 'everything you need to know, and nothing you don't.' The information is clear, concise, and to the point.

Jeff Tomlin has studied Long-Term care since 1994, and has taught a class on Long-Term care planning for his local community college since 2011. This book grew out of the research he did for that class. Because of his own family history in this area, he is on a mission to make everyone aware of the need to plan ahead.

About the Author:

Jeff Tomlin lives in Oregon with his 1 beautiful wife of 20 years, 2 daughters, 2 dogs, 2 cats, 18 chickens and 100,000 bees. Jeff has lived and worked in Oregon since graduating from Northwest Nazarene College in 1988 with a degree in mathematics. Holly and Jeff were married in 1992 and have two adopted daughters from the Philippines. Jeff is passionate about planning ahead for Long-Term Care because of his own family history. It's his desire to help you avoid pitfalls. This book is the culmination of everything he's learned about Long-Term Care planning since 1994. It also rises out of the research he did while preparing to teach a Long-Term Care planning course at his local community college. Because of personal exposure to the pain of a Long-Term Care event, and after learning the statistics, he is convinced that everyone who is able should plan ahead for eventual care. Jeff started his insurance career in 1988 and sold his first Long-Term Care Insurance policy, to his father, in 1994. He is Partnership trained, and is a member of the American Association for Long Term Care Insurance (AALTCI). He achieved his CLTC (Certified in Long Term Care) credentialing in 2009.
