Coincidences of Time and Place; the meetings of strangers; moments of decision: these are the key elements of this Collection of Short Stories. They explore our relationship with the past and with the landscape, and the opportunities given to us to discover ourselves fully. Characters move in significant landscapes, whether that is the urban territories of London or the distinct countryside of Yorkshire, Northumberland or the Highlands of Scotland. The development of many of the stories is deeply rooted in the intersection of moment, person and place. Some explore the impact of controlling or abusive relationships, and the potential for escape. Others, the overshadowing of two World Wars and the social dislocation that was, and perhaps still is, their legacy. The past impregnates the present and from it characters draw resources of hope and courage: the Season of opportunity that is given to them.

About the Author:

Born in Yorkshire Janet Killeen went to the University of Kent at Canterbury and after completing a master's degree, taught English in a London comprehensive school for over thirty years until retirement. In the past ten years, she has begun to explore the issues of faith and doubt, and the complex relationship of identity, time and place which have found expression in both of her collections of short stories, 'Recognition' and 'There is a Season'.  She has also written several books for children, believing in the importance of language and imagination to empower them. Living in South-East London, she values the richer opportunities retirement has given to enjoy friendships, travel, and writing. janetkilleen.com

Review:

... An exquisite collection of short stories that reflect on human longing and the power of the familiar ... These stories ... have a persistent prose-poetic quality that is deepened by Killeen's persistent lyricism... a magnetic, emotive offering from a profoundly gifted new voice.
5 Stars: Foreword Clarion Review September 2013
The anthology is an evocative and mature production... Delicately written, with a profound understanding of how to convey tentative interpersonal connection.
Blueink Reviews: October's Top Reviews (2013)

Often set in the past, Killeen's sensitive, pared-down short stories mark moments of connection.Set in various times and places, with a range of narrators, these stories have in common a concern with making or discovering connections.   Killeen's language throughout is delicate and poetic but powerful in its simplicity. Also powerful is Killeen's ability to imagine different points of view......bitter situations are overcome with quiet courage and the desire for a connection.
Spare, memorable and beautifully told.
