The story unfolds from beyond the grave by Julia daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cummings, a prominent family in the thriving farming community of Delaine. An incident occurs in the Cummings mansion leaving the community perplexed and the mystery remains unsolved for 10 years. Julia started attending a boarding school when she was five years old. She was sent by her parents prior to their separation. Mrs. Cummings, an invalid and confined to a wheel chair after suffering a serious fall from a horse which broke her hip. Mrs. Cummings moves into town and Mr. Cummings re-marries after 9 years to Brenda. Julia stays in touch with her mother more so than with her father and never gets to meet Brenda. After sixteen years she has grown up into a beautiful young lady and comes home to visit her mother to celebrate her twenty first birthday. Mrs. Cummings tells Julia her father has found out she is back in town and asks her to meet him in town. There he gives her a locket for her birthday and invites her to spend a few days at the Cummings mansion to rekindle their father, daughter rapport. Julia is happy about the invite and reunion agreeing to spend the weekend at the mansion. Brenda is away on a short trip, returning home sooner than planned. Seeing her new husband in town with Julia, a young attractive girl she assumes she has caught her new husband having an affair. Brenda spies on Julia and sneaks home the night Julia is at the mansion. She sees her husband leaving the main bedroom where she assumes Julia is sleeping. Distraught, she enters the room but Julia is not in there and Brenda waits hidden waiting for Julia to come in with her husband. During the night, with a storm is raging outside, Mr. Cummings and Julia enter the main bedroom and are confronted by an outraged Brenda who attacks Julia and stabs her to death. Mr. Cummings is finally able to overpower Brenda, and in a fit of rage kills Brenda. Mr. Cummings is remorseful and takes his life hanging himself from the rafters in the bedroom, but not before calling on the gardener Charles. When Charles arrives at the mansion he is confronted with the gruesome scene but follows the directions given to him in a note. He hides the bodies in a secret room in the mansion and keeps the secret of what transpired that night for 10 years. Unable to continue, Charles commits suicide. With the four having died under stressful conditions they are stuck in that void, Mr. Cummings, Brenda and Charles wish to make amends for their individual actions. They join forces unknown to Julia and assist Julia in obtaining her absolution. In Julia’s quest she uses Brandy as her vessel because of their unique likeness.
