I have lived on or near Puget Sound all my life. My earliest memories of my father involve a rusty and leaking sailboat that we sailed from Edmonds to our beach cabin on the Kitsap Peninsula near Foul Weather bluff. This is a place that I still dream about more than 42 years later. I learned to pray and to face my fears and to adore the natural world at our beach cabin.
Eventually the cabin was sold for an airplane and we lived in Edmonds with a beautiful view of Admiralty Inlet. We could see Point No Point and that was just a few miles from our old beach cabin.
I spent seven summers from 1977 until 1983 in the San Juan Islands as summer staff for a YMCA Summer Camp. Later I spent 6 years working as a waterfront director for a CYO Summer Camp from 1986 until 1991.
All of my life I have constantly been aware of a giant natural wonder. The tides relentlessly come in and out every 12 hours. In South Puget Sound The water Rises and falls 13 feet or more twice every day. This is a lunar driven clock that cycles relentlessly. It will continue for a couple billion years. It is profound in that we are so temporary and it will continue and wait for none of us.
