9781481885454: Letters Written by Catlett Conway (1840 - 1929) CSA Veteran: Letters dating from 1892 through 1920 (Cambridge Companions to Literature)

Catlett Conway wrote the letters in this volume between 1892 and 1920 to his half-brother, William Buchanan Conway. The brothers enjoyed their childhood on a plantation, Ellerslie, built by their father, Battaile Fitzhugh Taliaferro Conway, in Madison County, Virginia. By 1892 Catlett was living in Richmond, Virginia, and he later moved to Philadelphia, where he lived with his daughter and her family. Dr. W. B. Conway began his married life in Blacksburg, Virginia, and moved eventually to Athens, Georgia. The letters paint a picture of the brothers' lives and reveal many of Catlett's memories and opinions of the Civil War. He recalls a number of specific battles. Both Catlett and William Buchanan were CSA veterans, and Catlett's military record is included in this volume.

About the Author:

Anne Price Yates was fascinated by her family history from a young age. She enjoyed reading the pages in her parents’ genealogical binders and quizzing them for more information about the people in them. She later combined these volumes into one of her own set of genealogical records. After moving to Ridgecrest, CA, in the mid-1970s, she joined a local genealogical society and began researching her family history, extending the lines her parents had provided. In 1980, she and her father, Dr W. Conway Price, collaborated on a project that resulted in her self-publication of Increase in Prices in 1985. Since then she has written stories and articles about her ancestors and is currently editing some of her father’s genealogical compilations for publication. Although a writer/editor for nearly twenty years, she has always been an artist, primarily an oil painter. She continues to combine these two primary interests.
