9781481963800: Red Onion, White Onion and Other Malay Legends and Folklores

The seven Malay legends and folkores contained in this book are some of the most popular ones in Malaysia, some of which had been turned into movies as early as the 1950's and theatre productions. Some of the stories are from the pre-Islamic period, but they remain popular up to this day, dealing with kings and queens and people of old, most entertaining and relevant in the modern times.

About the Author:

M A Badrie spent the early 1970's at UC Davis, California and Washington State University where he earned his BS and MS respectivly in agricultural studies. Mixing with the international communities there he was exposed to many foreign legends and folklores, including native American ones. He continued his studies in Holland at Delft and later did his Ph D at Lancaster, UK, and later was back in USA at Harvard as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar. He retired in 1992 from his academic career and started practising as a professional environmental consultant, with works in the tropical forests, the coastal zones, the offshore areas and the deep rural areas. He has published a number of academic books and tecnical papers, but this collection of Malay legends and folklores is a new venture coming from a deep and keen interest in stories of old. His next book is a collection of short stories : "Scary Stories from Malaysia for the Truly Unafraid," and this one deals with ghosts, witchcrafts and evil spirits. He is married to Rubi, his wife of 35 years and he lives in the university town of Bangi, just 20km from Kuala Lumpur.
