About the Author:

About the Author Diana Taylor Hart Diana Taylor Hart writes page-turning suspense novels laced with intrigue and romance that also carry underlying messages of hope and inspiration for our time. Hart has taught in the elementary schools in Arizona’s barrios and loved every moment. There she found students bright and eager to learn and came to love them, as well as their families. They taught her lessons in humility and made her a better teacher, she weaves this theme into her books to emphasize that children really matter. Hart writes about teaching in the barrio to address sorely neglected issues that impact young lives, generate excitement about learning, and prompt students to think. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Arizona. Hart lives in the beautiful state of Arizona where she and her husband enjoy sunset strolls with their dog. From Kirkus Reviews:

A highly original debut murder mystery featuring a young elementary school principal with a tragic past. Samantha Cabot Samuels is no stranger to tragedy. She lost her parents at 17; years later, her husband died in a plane crash, and her 5-year-old daughter died of leukemia. However, the fragile and shaken Samantha is determined to make a life for herself. She accepts a position as the principal of Madison Elementary School in Arizona; as a result, she accepts the challenge of turning around a drug- and crime-ridden school with one of the worst reputations in its district. On the first day of school, she discovers the dead body of superintendent Bill Austin, a knife thrust in his back, and she suddenly finds herself embroiled in an intense murder investigation. Other crimes follow, targeting the school administration; Samantha’s own office is vandalized in a horrifying way. Later, she discovers a strange discrepancy in the school budget that may be connected to the crimes, and as she fights to keep the school open, she finds herself unable to trust her own colleagues. She slowly realizes that even her past tragedies might have been orchestrated by someone she knows. This intense, fast-moving drama is gripping and compelling to the last page, and readers will likely admire Samantha’s idealism and strength. Throughout, Samantha shows a fierce determination to help her students and an irrepressible fighting spirit as she battles her own past. Overall, the unraveling mystery, set against the backdrop of a failing elementary school, is a poignant read. A tightly written, suspenseful mystery.

KIRKUS REVIEW

A young woman, with the help of her family and friends, confronts past dangers and a new string of mysteries in Hart’s (Moving On, 2013, etc.) latest installment of the Old Pueblo series.

Two boys who attend principal Samantha Ryan’s Arizona elementary school go missing, and the mother of one of the boys asks her to help find them. As she begins her investigations, she realizes that another student, Natalie Yates, may be involved when the girl comes to school with a broken rotator cuff. The girl reveals that one of the missing boys has a drunken, abusive father, and that the other one was trying to help his friend. Ryan and others respond to these revelations, become involved in a shootout, and uncover a child pornography operation. Then Ryan’s husband Thomas’ former boss kidnaps her grandfather, and a drug kingpin gets into the mix. Meanwhile, Ryan is pregnant, in the process of adopting two little girls, and testifying against a man who nearly killed her husband (in the last book). This novel’s mind-spinning action and large cast of characters may lead to some confusion, although there’s a helpful who’s-who list at the start. At points, the detailed dialogue takes away from the ongoing plot; for example, Thomas speaks with his friend, a police detective, about the children’s health but then goes on a tangent about the wonders of stem cell treatments in modern medicine. At other times, though, detail is surprisingly lacking: “They mentioned a few things that concerned me but after a discussion, I was fine with their suggestions,” Ryan thinks, regarding a legal strategy. That said, the storyline moves swiftly from crime to crime and plot point to plot point. Ryan shows her determination to defend those who can’t defend themselves, even when putting herself and her unborn child in the line of fire. There are plenty of hints that readers can expect another installment in this series.

A fast-paced, if uneven, mystery about protecting familial bonds.
