Sex and Spaghetti Sauce combines old world traditions, humorous anecdotes and the latest research on living a healthy life. Long before attending medical school, Dr. Carmella Sebastian had a passion for wellness. Her old world, Italian mother demonstrated that healthy living was grounded in simple, practical choices – eat your greens, everything in moderation, dance and clean the house for exercise, laughter is the best medicine. To this day, Dr. Carm swears that most of what she learned about health and wellness came from her mother, even more so than what she learned in medical school and residency. And yes, as the title of this book suggests, her mother even shared some wisdom about the importance of sex and how it is part of a healthy life no matter your age. In Sex and Spaghetti Sauce: My Italian Mother’s Recipe for Getting Healthy and Getting Busy in your 50s and Beyond, Dr. Carm shares some of these anecdotal family stories that are hilarious, yet practical. Behind the hilarity lies a lot of wisdom on wellness and living a long, happy life - which her parents did. Dr. Carm covers the components she believes will help you reach your wellness potential and after each chapter she shares her recipe for incorporating each one into your daily life. Those components include: · Healthy eating and nutrition strategies · Portion control and tips for when eating out · How to make habit changes stick · Exercise is the key (that includes cleaning the house!) · The power of sleep · Nurture good relationships · Be your own health advocate · The importance of sex · Surviving mental fatigue Carmella Sebastian, MD, MS is a nationally known wellness educator and expert on healthy, sane living. Dr. Carm is a Board-Certified Internal Medicine physician who became involved in Administrative Medicine in 1993. From 1993 to 2005, she was the Chief Medical Officer for Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania (BCNEPA). In this role, she became very involved with health and wellness programs and was an innovator of a worksite wellness program at BCNEPA that won the Welcoa Gold Wellness Award in 1999. In 2000, Dr. Sebastian became the “face” of BCNEPA and was featured on television, in the news paper and was heard on radio. She delivered public service announcements and feature health pieces. In this year, she attained her Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration. Dr. Carm was formally trained by public relations experts and media gurus such as amember of the team that trained General Schwartzkopf during Desert Storm, a Principal of the agency that assisted Geraldine Ferraro during her bid for Vice President and Clarence Jones, author of Winning with the News Media: A Self-Defense Manual When You are the Story. In early 2005, Dr. Carm, along with a local news personality and Gary Marino, author of Big & Tall Chronicles: MisAdventures of a Lifelong Food Addict undertook a weight-loss “trek” throughout the 13 counties of Northeastern Pennsylvania. This was called the Million Pound Meltdown and featured Dr. Carm in four weeks of non-stop media coverage. The Meltdown was hugely successful, at least partially due to Sebastian’s sense of humor, down-to-earth personality and approachability. Her more experienced colleagues referred to her as “doctor mediagenic”. In 2005, Dr. Carm took a position with Humana, Inc. as their Market Medical Officer in North and Central Florida and was featured in public service announcements. She was the lead physician during the Swine Flu epidemic and was the media contact during the several months when this was front page news. Dr. Carm’s most current role is as a Senior Medical Director of Client Clinical Solutions and Wellness at Florida Blue. Eighty percent of her duties involve public speaking and presentations. She has been Welcoa certified as a Wellness Coach and speaks to groups of more than 250 consultants, brokers and employer groups throughout Florida every year.
