"Re-Becoming" is the third and final novel in "The Next American Hero" series. In Book One, "Standing Too Close to the Flame," you met Tony Wallace, the fictionalized name of a real life prosecutor, as good a district attorney as there ever was. With the help of his sidekick, retired sheriff Timber McCaw, he successfully prosecuted the killers in a gruesome thirteen-year-old murder case that had haunted his small Montana community. His remarkable skill and courage led to the successful prosecution of 173 murder cases, and to lofty political ambitions. His penchant for the risky combination of Jack Daniels and late night bar conquests, his stress relievers of choice, led to a roller coaster life and a series of adventures that demanded chronicling. In Book Two, "Talks with Crows," Tony found himself with too much on his plate: the town's prominent lawyer murdered; a dirty senator taking bribes to block a killer's extradition back to Montana; an upcoming gubernatorial campaign; and a wife and son who needed him at home. When he asked Timber how he could keep everybody happy, Timber replied, "There's no blanket big enough to keep all those toes warm. You have to decide who and what are important to you." You'll have to read the novel to see who got the blanket and who got the cold toes. In Book Three, "Re-Becoming," Tony decides to run for the governor's chair, believing that is the way he can best serve the people of the state as The Company abandons its workers and its environmental responsibilities and as the dirty senator continues to exert his control over state resources and folks' lives. You'll be introduced to a new word, "Re-Becoming," the title of a painting that finds it's way from a powwow in Pendleton, Oregon, to Tony's office wall in Choteau, Montana. As the trials proceed through the courts and as Tony's run for office encounter some unexpected hurdles, the meaning of the painting are revealed. As Sister Elsie, a Great Falls counselor used to say, "You do what you need to do, until you learn what you need to learn." Hang on for the ride as Tony learns what he needs to learn.

Steve Buttress did his time in a suit and tie, working with governors from four states as his community development career spanned the continent: from Montana to Florida, Nebraska to Delaware, Ohio to Oklahoma. The governors weren't nearly as much fun as some of the characters he met along the trail. The "Next American Hero" series tells the tale of one of those characters, a district attorney who would be governor.
