9781482773408: Illicit Liaisons--Volume 1: A memoir of teen love, lust, and sexual abuse

High school sophomore Megan Morgan is trapped in a dormant period self chosen as armor against the whims of her mother's alcohol addiction. She is inspired to re-enter life by the dramatic intervention of her Uncle Jack with whom Megan has had little prior contact. While Megan's mother seeks therapy for her alcohol dependency in a residential clinic, Jack becomes Megan's guardian and mentor. Although Jack intends only to expose Megan to enriching experiences and adventures, he discovers that not only is Megan developing a crush on him, but that the girl's unfolding dynamic personality is affecting him, too. For a teen, falling in love is a time honored and expected rite of passage, but not for Megan when she realizes that her first romance happens to be with her uncle. Volume 1 of "Illicit Liaisons" illuminates the positive and negative results of this potent relationship. Volume 1 will stand alone as a portrayal of an unintended but common illicit romance between close family members. It also serves as crucial seque into Volume 2, "The Fountain At Ugalini's", wherein Megan encounters two more challenging and destructive events than her entanglement with her uncle. Similarities exist between "Illicit Liaisons" and the novels "The Torn Skirt", "She's Come Undone", and "One Hundred Strokes of the Brush Before Bed" in the personality forming experiences of the female protagonist. However, in those stories adults play a minimal or negative role in the life of the female protagonist. In "Illicit Liaisons", many of the adults play a positive and influential role.

Review:

Book Review of Illicit Liaisons, Volume 1

Shortly before her sixteenth birthday, Megan Morgan’s alcoholic mom is sent to a clinic for treatment, and Megan’s aunt moves in. Sharing guardianship is her mom’s younger brother, Jack, who enters Megan’s life like a hurricane. Megan had been depressed and reclusive for many years. Jack forces her out of her shell, introducing her to soccer, dancing, and more. Before she knows it, Megan is on the soccer team, making friends, even throwing parties, and it’s all because of Jack’s magical influence. But then Megan begins to become confused by her feelings for Jack, and one day she decides to be open about her infatuation. Surprisingly, Jack has begun to feel the same way, and though he cautions that it is wrong, that there is no future for a romance between them, the two embark on a relationship. Stolen kisses and dinner dates eventually lead to more amorous encounters; believing herself in love, Megan cannot get enough of Jack. But when they are discovered together, everything comes crashing down.

//Illicit Liaisons// is the first in a series about Megan; this volume explores, in detail, the incestuous relationship with her uncle that had such a major impact on the woman she’d ultimately become. Despite the disturbing subject matter, this book is very well written, almost pleasurable to page through; readers might find themselves enjoying Megan’s and Jack’s relationship if they could just forget the biological tie between them. While it’s a little unrealistic to think that Megan could have remembered everything in that much detail (the bulk of the story is technically told via journal entries that Megan has written for her therapist after she and Jack are exposed), the story nonetheless flows very nicely, and it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of it all.
