From the Publisher

Supersheds traces the development of this type of building that has closely followed technological progress. The author examines and compares buildings such as the early train sheds, Crystal Palace and Galerie des Machines. The most significant industrial sheds are examined in detail. The development of the 'well-serviced shed' is explored from its roots in the early 20th century American factories to the European Modern Movement, the wartime black-out factories, the systems approach, the slickskin examples for the 1960s and 70s, and the exciting masted structures of the 1980s. The author also looks at 'lightweight structures' in the form of space frames, suspended roof and fabric membranes. This is a highly interesting and stimulating book, and with its numerous illustrations and international coverage it will be invaluable for students and a useful reference source for architects and engineers.
