The Darknet: An underworld of drug smugglers, assassins, anonymous hackers and slave traders operating out of the "Deep Web". Computer Science instructor Chase was once part of an elite hacking team that operated on the dark side of the law. He gave all that up to fly the straight and narrow and took up teaching future programmers, until a runaway with a penchant for all things digital steals an unencrypted laptop belonging to him. From there it is an unmerciful roller-coaster ride of corkscrews and loops across the southern states of the USA, only to learn that he will have to dust off his old skills to not only get it back, but save the kid who stole it. Fans of Ridley Scott's Black Rain, Matrix or Kill Bill will find much to enjoy here, with a finale that is completely unexpected. Question & Answers: Question: If you could describe Darknet in a few words, how would you go about it? Answer: Probably something like Black Rain in New Orleans, only without so many Japanese. Possibly The Matrix, but with someone a bit less geeky than Neo. The action is pretty fast-paced, the culture rich in description, and you really feel like you are on that motorcycle with Chase in the middle of the keys trying to outrace hired killers on an empty tank. Question: What is the pace of the novel, slow or fast? Answer: Fast paced without a doubt, though there are a few sections where you are allowed to catch your breath. It is meant to be more punchy than usual, like Kill Bill or the first Matrix film. There are details you'll miss the first time, no doubt. Question: What is so "darknet" about it? Answer: It is part techno-thriller, so there are a lot of specific things that tie in to that culture in the same way explosives or silencers play into Hitman or Call of Duty (i.e. Tor, Freenet, Truecrypt, Proxy hopping, Reloaded, just to name a few), though it is not necessary at all to be a "geek" to enjoy it any more than was required to enjoy seeing Neo do his stuff in The Matrix. Question: Why write something that has already been done by Hollywood? Answer: I wanted to write about a character who is not that different from the reader. With most thriller movies, with the exception of Die Hard, the protagonist is usually a superhuman with godlike abilities. I wanted someone who was easier to relate to. Question: Sequel? Answer: Most assuredly. This novel plants the seeds, though admittedly some will sprout sooner than later.
