About the Author:

About The Author English author Henry Rider Haggard (1856 –1925) wrote adventure novels set in exotic locations including Africa. He founded the Lost World literary genre with stories at the lighter end of Victorian literature Haggard, generally known as H. Rider Haggard, was born in Norfolk, England, After failing his army entrance exam, he contemplated taking the British Foreign Office exams but didn’t follow through. Haggard's father sent him to South Africa to be an assistant to the secretary to Sir Henry Bulwer, Lieutenant-Governor of the Colony of Natal. He fell in love with Mary Elizabeth "Lilly" Jackson and wrote to his father informing him that he intended to return to England and get married. His father forbade it until Haggard had a career and Jackson married a banker instead. He eventually moved back to England and married, settling in Norfolk. Haggard was called to the bar but decided novel writing was more profitable. He drew on his experiences in Africa to create characters including Allan Quatermain.
