Few stories of adoption reunion can be as dramatic and moving as this! Set mainly in the Welsh Valleys of the nineteen-seventies, it tells the tale of Susan who finds herself pregnant at the age of fifteen. Sent 200 miles away to give birth in secret, the baby is forcibly taken for adoption after just eight days together. Susan struggles through twenty years not knowing if her daughter is alive or dead before tragically suffering a miscarriage with her next pregnancy. When a counsellor encourages the playwright to put set her grief out on the page, Half A Million Women is the result - a play telling the autobiographical tale of a teenage mother who loses her child to adoption. But when the play is performed on her long-lost daughter's twenty-first birthday, no-one can possibly imagine the real-life drama unfolding in the two women's lives. This remarkable real-life story understandably made national headlines. That will come as no surprise when you read the dramatic events of the heart-wrenching reunion of mother and daughter. A truly rich story which captures spirit of time and place, this deeply moving and warmly funny book may be packed with tragedy but it is ultimately joyful.
