Synopsis

Becoming Lee is a memoir, written as a collection of stories that illustrate the author’s hard-won values; providing readers a ringside seat for glimpses into the life of a headstrong little girl and the lessons she learns while growing into maturity. Readers can expect to laugh at stories that shimmer with lighthearted humor and feel moved by the inherent poignancy of a protagonist whose dramatic and sometime comic life events transform her and open her to the extraordinary. Becoming Lee inspires these vital questions in the reader: can you recall the experiences in your life that influenced or determined your values? And can you articulate and pass on those values as a legacy? In 2008, after reading an article about ethical wills, the author wrote her Ethical Will to be passed on to her grandchildren. Like a Last Will and Testament, an Ethical Will is a written document, but rather than being used to dispose of tangibles like portfolios and houses, an ethical will passes on to one’s survivors important intangibles: their lifetime values. The author’s ethical will serves as the framework for her memoir Becoming Lee, and highlights stories supporting twenty of her values, including: 1. Make Your Home a Magnet for Others 2. Work With a Joyful Heart 3. Nurture Those you Love 4. Cultivate Romance 5. Nourish Your Spirit With Music 6. Discover the Positive in the Negative 7. Do What you Love 8. Value Teamwork 9. Be a Unique Creation 10. Forgive Your Parents, They Did the Best They Could 11. Have Confidence in Yourself 12. Love Your Pets 13. Learn From Every Experience 14. Don’t Limit Yourself 15. Don’t Take Yourself too Seriously 16. Love Your Mother-in-Law 17. Spoil Your Grandchildren 18. Create Lasting Memories 19. Life is Brief, Cherish Each Moment 20. Value Family History and Traditions From her birth and early life in the steel towns of Pennsylvania, an uprooting move from her beloved grandmother, to a cross-country relocation to California, the author shares her joys, pains and struggles and the important people who influenced her journey.

About the Author

Lee Jackman describes western Pennsylvania during the uncomplicated 1940s and 1950s as the petri dish that cultivated and grew who she is today. For her first seven years, she lived in residential Duquesne, nurtured by an understanding and beloved grandmother who became her lifelong role model. At age seven, she and her family moved to Industry, Pennsylvania, where she experienced Appalachian-waif classmates, friends’ fathers with ties to the mob, and immigrant grandmothers who wore long black skirts and babushkas while shopping in the A&P market. Stabilizing forces in her life were the constancy of family, church activities, music, and piano lessons. In seventh grade, she began writing poems and stories in a blue-lined notebook about family, classmates, and her teacher, Mrs. Ewing. One day her teacher asked her to stand and read her work to the class. Everyone listened attentively, including her Mrs. Ewing. That day she realized the power of her writing and knew she had the ability to tell a story. Her first book—Love, Lee—published in 2012, is a compilation of letters, poems, lyrics, storystreams, fables, limericks, and memorials written for family and friends over a forty-year period. A Claremont, California, resident since 1958, she lives with her husband, Duane. Four of the five children in their blended family are also Claremont residents, along with six of their eight grandchildren. Lee A.
