The author was a product of the Great Depression. A native East Texan, he grew up in an era that included the last few years of the Depression and World War II. Like many of that era, he learned to be thrifty, work hard and take advantage of whatever opportunities may come along. He was taught by his parents that a strong character, a commitment to doing the right thing to the best of his ability and to live by the precepts of "The Golden Rule" would produce both good results and success. In addition to developing and running a successful company, the author and his wife were active in civic and political activities throughout their lives. They have provided leadership and financial support to a number of organizations, primarily in San Angelo, Texas. They still live in San Angelo, where both their daughters families also reside.
