9781484929117: My Saigon: The Local Guide to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (Volume 1)

This book is a complete, in-depth guide to visiting Saigon, also known as Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I'm a Saigon native, and in this book, I show you all the locals' places that you could never find on your own, and you definitely won't find in any other Vietnam guidebooks. This is the only guidebook to Saigon written by a local rather than by a foreign travel writer. And not just any local, but one who knows Saigon in and out. So if you want to see the real Saigon, instead of the same old tourist traps, this is the book for you. I don't want to speak badly about anyone, but a lot of the "information" in other guidebooks about Saigon is... well... I don't want to speak badly about anyone. But other English-language guidebooks for Saigon make basic factual mistakes on just about every page -- so how can you trust them with more advanced stuff? There's nothing wrong with foreigners not knowing their way around Saigon, but would you trust those foreigners to be your guides in Saigon? They recommend for you to stay in big, expensive, foreign-owned hotels, and to eat in tourist-trap restaurants. That makes sense for foreign travel writers' guidebooks, since that's where foreign travel writers stay, and that's where foreign travel writers eat. But that's not what you want, is it? And that's not the kind of guide I've written for you. I've given you the locals' guide, with recommendations for you to experience the real Saigon, while still staying within your comfort zone (no Vietnamese language skills required). Instead of the same old tourist recommendations, this is a book of where Vietnamese people like me would go if we had a free day in Saigon -- which is totally different from where the foreign travel writers' guidebooks would send you! Hey, do you know that Quan An Ngon (where every guidebook tells you to go) is a terrible restaurant? Do you know that near Ben Thanh Market there's a Japantown full of Vietnamese college hipsters? And that down the road there's a place where those hipsters go listen to live bands play loud indie rock? Oh, and do you know why you would probably hate a traditional Vietnamese massage? And do you know what the women in tight dresses trying to lure you in for a "massage" are all about? (It's not what you think!) I cover all these topics in this book. I even cover the basics of Vietnamese language, with language use and phrases, how to make sense of signs you see around town, and how to deal with numbers and currency. Don't know where to stay in Saigon? I recommend one street that's full of small hotels, all costing around $30 USD per night. Choose your own hotel from the many on that street, because I'm not getting paid to sell you anything. Don't know where to eat? I guide you to a great little food stall right in your neighborhood, that 99% of tourists walk right past by, and then tell you where to find good food in the mostly-tourist-trap food stalls of Ben Thanh Market. Fun fact: Vietnamese people don't all eat dog meat! But do you want to know why there is zero chance of you unknowingly being served dog meat in Vietnam? This book thoroughly answers all these questions. And there's a lot more. This is the book's newly updated 2014 edition. I will make you a local insider in Saigon. Welcome to my Saigon, and enjoy the journey!

Product Description:

My Saigon (2015 edition) is the complete insider native's guide to Saigon. It's your ticket to the street-level, local Saigon that tourists never see.

You'll learn how to get around and how to be safe from all the common pitfalls. You'll know who's who on the street, and understand the typical backgrounds and motivations of the people and places around you. You'll eat and drink like a hungry Saigonese local. You'll get up and running with cash, internet, a hotel room, and everything else you need.

Did you know that there's a cluster of bars playing live indie rock (for Vietnamese hipsters) every night, just outside the tourist center? Or that there's a hidden music bar where old-school aristocrats pay $20 a drink to relive 1960s Saigon? Do you know where to buy real Saigonese treats to bring back home, instead of the toxic junk sold at the tourist markets? Do you know where you can see a big Cao Dai temple, right in Saigon, without having to go on a silly bus tour? And there's an old-school Vietnamese massage shop, and a salon where movie stars have their hair washed (and you can too), and lots, lots more.

My Saigon also gives you a deep understanding of Saigonese culture, history, and language. One of the reviewers said: too much information! Ok, sorry, but I love to talk about Saigon! You'll learn some of the history and local insights that the official guides will never tell you. You'll learn fun local slang, learn some of the rudest words in Vietnamese (which have nothing to do with the bedroom or the bathroom), know places to make Vietnamese friends, and know the proper etiquette for picking up girls, or guys, or whatever you're into! And yes, I'm a bit of a history and culture nerd, so I make some digressions to explain some stuff deeply. Are my in-depth descriptions of streets and food and culture too much to read? Just flip the page!

My Saigon is going to be your super secret tactical tool for the inside info and deep explorations of the thickets of the city. Other sources can be your general preparation, for general and public info that you can easily find for free on most travel websites.

As for other guidebooks? Let me be a little bit serious here. I have three big problems with other guidebooks: 1) they make basic factual mistakes on every page, 2) they send you to tourist traps that Vietnamese people never go to, and 3) they treat us Vietnamese people as zoo animals, an exotic curiosity. According to those other guidebooks, we're all bucktoothed peasants in rice-paddy hats out to swindle foreigners. You can think of us Saigonese people that way if you want, but you'll miss out on the real Saigon if you take on that kind of attitude.

Come to my Saigon, where you can immerse yourself completely in the city and its culture and live like a local -- all without leaving your comfort zone (no Vietnamese language skills required). I hope to welcome you to my wonderful, glorious, bustling, spectacular city.

Enough talking! See you in Saigon!

Product Description:

Experience real Saigon: My Saigon 2017

Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) offers bustling streets, amazing walks, too-hip-for-you cafes, rocking music clubs, luxurious salons, explosively delicious restaurants, and indoor cat zoos. Saigon is Vietnam. It’s young, practical, crowded, and a little bit brash.

My Saigon is the detailed local lowdown on Saigon, full of the places, the tricks, the stories, and the nuances that only a seasoned Saigonese local would know.

Unfortunately, most visits to Saigon are limited to the same boring “attractions”: a few unimpressive buildings, a few overpriced markets, and a few propaganda bits about the War.

Saigon has so much more to offer, but it’s largely undocumented in English-language travel guides.

My Saigon documents what knowledgeable Saigonese people know: the most amazing experiences, the funniest stories, the best coffee, the best food (far beyond pho), the go-to shops, the best hangouts, the coolest stuff to see, and hipsters, hipsters everywhere.

  • Big-picture layout of the city.
  • Basic history your tour guides aren't allowed to tell you.
  • Don't stay in the backpacker cesspool, but don't overpay for a hotel.
  • Get up and running with cheap mobile data in minutes, without visiting any phone stores.
  • Pho isn't really a big thing in Saigon: it's a northern Vietnamese food. I'm sorry. But I'll show you the best pho in Saigon anyway.
  • Delicious, authentic, moderately priced restaurants where my friends and I eat -- and that you won't find on Tripadvisor.
  • Coffee. Did someone say coffee? I sure like coffee. Coffee. Yes. More coffee. Please. I'll tell you where.
  • Hang out where Vietnamese people hang out, eat street snacks, listen to live music, whatever.
  • Make cool friends, date guys or girls, whether you're a guy or a girl.
  • Silly Saigonese slang, maybe to use with your new Vietnamese girlfriend or boyfriend.
  • The lowdown on how Saigon's mafia runs the streets and who the various street characters are.
  • Would you wear a Dixie hat at a NAACP meeting? Then don't wear a hammer-and-sickle t-shirt in Saigon.
  • Don't give money to beggars and street kids, because they're all owned by the mafia.
  • Saigon taxis are convenient and trouble-free, if you know the simple trick to avoid scams -- but Uber and Grab are even better!

My Saigon includes tutorials on basic Vietnamese language, history (that Vietnamese tour guides are forbidden from mentioning), Saigon street characters, urban navigation and transportation, internet and phones, money and prices, avoiding scams, making friends, and meeting love interests.

Saigon is a wealth of sights, sounds, smells, and experiences. My Saigon is a guide, a love confessional, an instruction manual, and an ode to the city.
