Saturday morning is here, and it’s time for a trip to the beach! With a bellyful of shrimp and grits, Nick and his mama head out to Folly Beach in search of hidden treasure. Mama is looking for seashells to decorate a mirror, but Nick is hoping to find something more exciting, like a chest full of gold coins secretly hidden by pirates. He searches for scribbled clues in the lettered olive shells, while Mama tells him his favorite story—the one about Morris Island Lighthouse, and why it sits so far out in the water. Soon, it’s time to play pirate, and Nick climbs to the top of a driftwood tree with a spyglass in hand. From way up high, he spots something in the surf that could be the treasure he’s been looking for. This object ends up being an important piece of local history, and even more exciting than he imagined! As educational as it is entertaining, My Best Find...Ever is full of real-life references to Charleston, South Carolina. Local students will love learning facts about nearby landmarks and places, including the area’s association with the Civil War. For even more information, kids, parents, and teachers will be able to scan QR codes embedded in the book, a new technology that allows you to instantly open websites on your smartphone, iPad, or other mobile device. From the Morris Island Lighthouse to Civil War history, children will be able to learn more fascinating facts by accessing informational websites with the push of a button. This adventurous story is sure to spark the curiosity of young readers in Charleston or anywhere else, using an engaging tone and beautiful illustrations geared specifically toward children ages five to ten. Ideally, readers will want to reach out in search of their own local history...and maybe find a treasure or two themselves!
