Whether you are a student teacher just beginning to explore English language teaching, an ESL teacher, or a seasoned classroom teacher integrating second language learners into a mainstream K?12 program, Adding English: A Guide to Teaching in Multilingual Classrooms, Second Edition, is a comprehensive source of ideas and advice for enhancing the learning of all students, in all subject areas, at all grade levels.
The organization of this new edition remains the same, and the content that quickly made the first edition a core text in many courses for ESL teachers has been revised and updated to reflect new research in the field and new program initiatives. Elizabeth Coelho sets out exemplary practices and practical strategies to help you: ensure that newcomers feel welcome and supported in your multilingual school and classroom; understand the challenges faced by those who are adding English to their repertoire of languages; develop your knowledge of the basics of English so that you can support language learners more effectively; provide content-based language instruction geared to the needs of English language learners; organize a program and plan lessons that meet the needs of all students; and plan assessment and evaluation activities that take into account the needs of second language learners.
The Second Edition features: revised procedures for initial language and literacy assessment; information on Response to Intervention (RTI); discussion on Translanguaging to communicate within the family and school; program planning highlighting the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP), and information on Specialty Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE); in-depth explanation of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR); and new activities and examples. There are updated resource lists to reflect the enormous amount of material in the field that has been published in print and online since the publication of the first edition.

Elizabeth Coelho has had a long and distinguished career focused on English language learners, immigrant education, and effective instruction in linguistically and culturally diverse schools. A former coordinator for English as a Second Language and English Literacy Development in the Toronto District School Board, she has taught teacher education courses at the University of Toronto, and has worked on policy and resource development related to English language learners for the Ontario Ministry of Education. Elizabeth is a popular presenter at international conferences, and has recently been working with educators in Spain, where immigration has had a strong impact on schools.
Her professional articles and resource books for teachers include Learning Together in the Multicultural Classroom (1994), Teaching and Learning in Multicultural Schools: An Integrated Approach (1998), and Language and Learning in Multilingual Classrooms: A Practical Approach (2012). Several of her publications have been translated into Spanish and Catalan. Elizabeth has also written classroom materials for English language learners, including Jigsaw and Jigsaw Plus.
"This book responds brilliantly to one of the most urgent educational challenges of the 21st. century. As a result of unprecedented population mobility, cultural and linguistic diversity is the norm in an increasing number of school systems across North America. Teachers are consequently faced with the need to present a standard curriculum to a highly diverse student body. For teachers and administrators attempting to help ESL students catch up academically and attain grade-level standards, Elizabeth Coelho has provided a comprehensive, yet extremely lucid, guide to effective practice. The chapters if this book are, without exception, insightful, thought-provoking, practical, but above all respectful of the intelligence and commitment of both educators and students."-Jim Cummins, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education
