I like laughing! Having a chuckle is fun but my favourite is the rip-snorting belly laugh that prompts the tears to roll down your cheeks, while taking your breath away at the same time. It leaves you with an aching abdomen and an energised soul. In late September 2009, I was told that I had a very aggressive form of prostate cancer. A significant operation followed and the prognosis was bleak. In fact, so much so that some of the more common follow-up treatments were considered to be a waste of time in my case. You might think that that the laughs would be in short supply after that news. Yet, as I set off on this particular journey, humour was seldom absent. When I received the news of the cancer, I’d not long since bought a French rural property, with plans to turn it into a renovated, modern country cottage. This came with some large challenges too but also filled me with laughter as my Anglo-Saxon urban experience encountered the realities of dealing with French artisans in the Norman countryside. I decided that these two, in some ways parallel, journeys upon which I found myself, could provide the basis for a book that would entertain and inform others; not just those facing cancer or a property renovation but anyone feeling that the pressures of daily life are just getting too much to bear. Unexpected journeys have benefits. You discover some interesting places.
