11 year-old Thanika Auk remembers the day when gun wielding boys, younger than she, drove she and her family out of their home in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on April 17, 1975. She and millions of others were forced out into the rural countryside, by Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge Communists, and forced into hard labor villages. This was the beginning of one of the bloodiest times in human history when 1 in 4 Cambodians perished from murder, starvation, or disease. Many were killed because they were educated, which threatened those in power. Thanika's own brother and many other of her family members, met this undeserving fate. She, her parents, and her other brother fought daily to avoid being discovered. They worked in extremely desolate working conditions to survive and eventually were able to escape the dangers of Cambodia and come to America. Thanika's true story is told from her perspective and is followed by commentary and historical referenced facts. It is a story that is being told so the younger generation of Cambodians know their past and that others know it, so they can prevent anything like it in the future.

About the Author:

Kathy Sperounis was born in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and began writing at an early age in the form of short stories and her daily journal. In college, she minored in English while majoring in history, often using factual information to write creative, historical fiction for her history and English classes. She went on to receive her Master’s in Library and Information Science and then her MBA. She was a library intern at Walt Disney Feature Animation Research Library in Florida, where she met her husband. In 1999 she began working for a small Christian college library, which she credits with leading her closer in her walk with God. She has written library book reviews and articles for community online papers. She believes that young adults today need to understand the world around them by reading more true-life accounts and that God and her dear friend, Phanary Auk, inspired the writing of this book. This is her third published book, and is currently working on other books. She lives with her family in Massachusetts, where she works as a librarian and computer teacher, at a small Christian school, as well as a part-time college librarian.
