John Roderigo Dos Passos (January 14, 1896 – September 28, 1970) was an American novelist and artist. He was born in Chicago, the illegitimate son of John Randolph Dos Passos, and it was not until he was 16 that his father recognized his paternity. Educated at a preparatory school, he went on to Harvard University, graduating in 1916. He was well-traveled, visiting Europe and the Middle East where he learned about literature, art and architecture. During World War I he was a member of the American Volunteer Motor Ambulance Corps in Paris and Italy, later joining the U.S. Army Medical Corps.
