9781490423715: Dancing with Fireflies

Dancing with Fireflies is a story of our family living in the darkness and intermittent light of my mother's paranoid schizophrenia. It is about three brothers dancing to the hide-and-seek choreography demanded by my mother's voices in our own search for safety; A telling of my father's stubborn determination to keep his family together, trying to fix what can't be fixed; and the near-tragedy prevented by his three young boys when he reached his breaking point. My mother's own history is woven into this memoir, shedding light and perhaps some understanding of the darkness into which she was so often called; a frightening place she never asked to visit. Despite the veil of mental illness which surrounded my family, we had our moments of laughter and gratitude for those treasured moments when the sunshine, however briefly, illuminated us. We shared adventures that all families experience. The reader need not be a survivor of mental illness to appreciate our story. Most of all, this is a story of healing between me, the oldest son, and my mother---years after her death.

About the Author:

Clemens Carl Schoenebeck has had poetry published in The Aurorean, Midwest Poetry Review, Caribbean Writer, Reader's Break, Ibbetson Street Press, and Small Brushes/Adept Press. Three of his poems have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize. His 9-11 poem, "For the Angels, Unwinged" was published in The Aurorean's Favorites Edition, celebrating their fifteen years of publishing poetry. Several of his short stories have won awards in the Writer's World Competition, Marblehead Festival of Arts. In 2012, he won both the fiction and poetry award, the first time this has been accomplished by the same writer. He has also been the recipient of the Marcia Doehner Award for poetry, and the Georgette Beck Award for fiction, also presented at the Festival of Arts. He lives on the North Shore of Boston with his wife Bonnie. His daughter's family and his granddaughters live nearby. He is a member of The Tin Box Poets, and The Marblehead Writer's Group. His creative muse is perhaps best energized by his participation in the choir of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greater Lynn, and the Festival Chorus of Old North Church in Marblehead. When that fails, there is always skiing.
