Winning in America (WIA) presents an innovative model of character and leadership development using the power of full engagement. It stimulates reluctant learners to achieve success through academics, social-emotional learning, and culturally responsive pedagogy.
At its core, WIA is a five-step, researched-based curriculum that is customized to strategically solve challenges across America’s diverse educational system. Akil Marshall has distinguished himself as a dynamic facilitator, professional developer and life coach who is extraordinarily adept at bringing calm to difficult situations, and these unique skills are reflected in the programming outlined in this important book. WIA unifies students, parents, and teachers toward the goal of educating America’s future leaders.
Highlights of the WIA program include Team Family Unity Umoja (Swahili for “unity”) and SELF (Students Evolving Learning Forever). The program also teaches skills that students need to succeed in their relationships and manage their schoolwork effectively and ethically.
The chapters within this book illustrate how teachers and administrators can achieve sustainable results in real classroom situations using the WIA model. Each element presented here, from the Winning In America Pledge to the I Am A Genius call-and-response, represents a tool for Managing Aggressive Attitudes with Tolerance (MAAT).
Akil Marshall is a consultant, researcher, and professional developer with 21 years of classroom experience.
