9781490815275: St. George's Cross and the Siege of Fort Pitt: Battle of Three Empires

The author has created a character from the early 1700s-Thomas Doty, who lives on a family farm outside of Whitemarsh, Pennsylvania. He meets a weathered sea captain who is down on his luck and short of hands aboard his sloop, the Shannon. Intrigued by adventure, Thomas goes to sea, but ends up shipwrecked and seized by a band of surly cutthroat pirates. Now, amid the designs of some sordid brigands well-acquainted with wanton cruelty, Thomas wonders if his courage and cunning can release him from his captors' wily schemes. His escape from them only hurls him into challenges fraught with unforeseen circumstances as he journeys homeward and beyond, discovering the distant frontier of western Pennsylvania and the Ohio country teeming with Mingo, Delaware, Shawnee, and Seneca Indians intent on preserving their culture from the ever-encroaching whites. As Thomas negotiates with death on the one hand and life on the other, survival forces him onward. He encounters English and French traders and finds friends, love, and a mortal enemy as he endures life within the turmoil of the French and Indian War, Pontiac's Rebellion, and the siege of Fort Pitt.

From the Author:

I decided to write this book after living in western Pennsylvania for a number of years and discovering a portion of the original military road General Forbes had constructed through the wilderness and over the Allegheny Mountain ridge to attack Fort Duquesne. My family and I also visited many historical sites in western Pennsylvania, including Fort Necessity and downtown Pittsburgh where Forts Duquesne and Pitt occupied the historic point of land, as well as many others. I enjoyed writing the book and learning much of the history of the French and Indian War in the "Ohio, Illinois, and Michigan Countries" along with Pontiac's Rebellion.

From the Inside Flap:

St. George's Cross and the Siege of Fort Pitt, Battle of Three Empires is the tale of a young man whose inspiring adventure at sea is interrupted by shipwreck and his capture by pirates. His courageous determination to escape and return home grows into a bittersweet victory with uncertain horizons. He decides to travel into the Pennsylvania wilderness, where he becomes entangled in the events that are leading up to the French and Indian War. With both English and French fur traders seeking to sway the Indians of the Ohio country to their side, Thomas finds himself perilously positioned in the middle. As the clouds of war gather, he develops friendships with Indians that inhabit the lush Ohio country, but also attracts one mortal enemy. Thomas struggles with loyalties and friendships with the English, French, and the Indians, and in the end pays the price to ensure victory during Pontiac's Rebellion and the siege of Fort Pitt.
