The Grandmothers Tribe is the multi-generational story of three women: Olivine, Natalie, and Curly. Olivine’s story begins as a pre-teenage girl living on a sharecropper farm in 1930’s rural Kentucky. A rebel known to torture her younger sister and sass the women of the farm, Olivine’s only refuge is in her Shawnee grandmother’s cabin. Natalie is a small child at the beginning of the novel whose father has just left and whose fragile, bi-polar mother ignores her. Her grandmother saves her when she moves in and becomes a surrogate mother for Natalie. Finally, Curly, who is known by several names throughout the novel, is a born mother who spends her life searching for someone for whom she can take care. Each woman discovers, with a bit of magic along the way, her mysterious connection to the others and what being a woman really means in her time and place.
