The world is getting older. People live longer now on average than any time in history.The world is getting younger. The average age of people in some countries has dropped into the twenties. One is Ghana in West Africa. In February 2008, a 10-year-old Ghanaian boy who had attached himself to me, sang for me the Ghanaian National Anthem, in English. It spoke a lot about cheating, know-it-all attitudes and bad lifestyles being destructive of the country. In turn, I committed the Star Spangled Banner upon him and while he was recovering mentioned that its composition was occasioned by America's second war with England, the first being the Revolution. He was aghast. "There has not always been America?" he asked. "No, we were a colony of England until 240 years ago. Actually, both America and Ghana have been colonies of England," says I." He corrected me. "Ghana has never been a colony," he assured me."Why do you speak English, then?""Ghana is an English-speaking country."I quit trying. Having witnessed Nkrumah's rise to dictatorship when I was about my friend's age, I wondered what kind of world a short cultural memory might bring. That speculation and the intersection of age, power, and faith is a series of book that I have planned called "Old Men and Infidels."Outland Exile is the first installment.
