Sally Lightfoot doesn't feel like she's grown up yet, let alone old. Suddenly widowed at 50, she's torn between pining forever in elasticated waists with unlimited Kettle Crisps and the TV, and getting over her grief enough to at least make some sort of life for herself. After a year of hiding from the world and waiting to die herself, a bored and miserable Sally takes the first half-hearted steps to recovery. As she follows a 10-point recovery plan in a self-help book called How To Win As A Widow, the advice to reconnect with old friends brings Ramone back into her life. Ramone and Sally worked together as backup singers on countless 70s stadium tours. Still the full-on rock chick to Sally's suburban housewife, Ramone sexes up Sally's list considerably. Sally is challenged to lose her wididity, her born-again virginity, before it's too late. Sally can only laugh. Why would she want to go through the dating hell her daughter Ami was going through? With her passion for her dead husband and added flabby bits on full, unhideable display?
But Sally does brave a solo holiday to the traffic-free Greek isle of Hydra, spiritual home of the affluent hippie. There she meets a man who awakens parts of her that she'd forgotten she ever possessed. If she could, Sally most definitely would. But would he? Are they 'just friends' or could it go further? Who would ever fancy her? As the holiday draws to an end, does she dare make a first move when rejection is the last thing her eggshell ego could take?
"An awesome read. Well written and highly entertaining." GEEKY GIRL REVIEWS
The character development is amazing. Sally grows so much once she starts to revaluate herself and regroup herself as a woman and mother. The book has an intensity that shows up at each page." MURPHY'S LIBRARY >
"Oh my goodness what a pleasure. I connected with the main character in a way I haven't done in a while. I felt her pain, her grief, her loss. I also understood fully her reactions, her decisions, her blunders - but most of all her courage and her humour. I didn't read this book, I lived it. I loved it. It's just so real, so gritty, so funny." US Amazon reviewer
"Moving and thought-provoking women's fiction. There is some romance and some comedy, but the book is not about the romance, it's about a woman finding herself. There are funny parts-the scene where she goes into a sex shop and sees rows of willys had tears rolling down my cheeks-but overall the subject matter is reflective." AWESOME INDIES award the AI Seal of Excellence For Outstanding Independent Fiction
"Last night I finished it before my cats got fed." ELIZABETH BACON-SMITH
"As with a coming of age story, those who are going through a similar situation can take comfort in the fact that the difficulties are universal. Those who have already been there (and those convinced they never will) can laugh at Sally's foibles." TOP US BOOK BLOG REVIEWER BIG AL AT BIG AL'S BOOKS & PALS
"A wonderful story about a woman learning to find herself again. If you enjoy a book that takes you on an emotional roller coaster while rooting for the main character, this is the book for you." LITERARY R&R
"This is the best book ever. That's the only way to describe it!" RITA REVIEWS
