Dear Leader,

This guide was created to accompany I am a YoungStars' and I Love Me Some Me! and I am a YoungerStars' and I Love Me Some ME Too! Positivity Poems, to give our youth a literary and literacy boost up! The poems are designed for marinating & masticating! They are intended to stimulate higher ordered thinking in youth. All 72+ poems are included in the guide enabling the instructor to use the book with or without the stand-a-lone books containing 50+ poems for young adults and 22+ poems for children. The instructor will be able to use poems from either of the books and have the opportunity to use any of them to tailor whatever is suitable for any grouping. The poems are meant to be read orally (I suggest not putting non confident readers on the spot) and followed by discussions where the participants are encouraged to speak their minds in an accepting atmosphere of tolerance. Some may seem a little "downpressing" but we NEED to talk openly about the issues. Seriously! So much of what we adults try to protect youth from - and are not preparing them for - is not allowing them to be their personal best selves! The author also included her thoughts while writing the poems to help you teach from the books.
Of course, due to the ages and level of understanding of your learners, some of the poems will require more dissection than others. Please encourage the learners to "use the muscles in your minds!"

Many of the poems are playful.
Some are "deep".
Others are sobering.
All are provocative.

THANK YOU FOR HELPING OUR YOUTH ELEVATE!                                                                                                                                                  LET'S BREAK THE BRAIN CHAIN!

From the Author:

My reasons for writing The YoungStars Series

  • To encourage the uninspired, reluctant and discouraged reader to develop the desire to read for pleasure. To develop the desire to read for greater knowledge.
  • To increase self-esteem; especially within African American/black youth.
  • To remove the stigma applied to African American/black people when they use colloquial language. To recognize all people engage in this behavior. To understand that there are special and new words used when one is a part of a particular group (the language among computer technicians, for example) which may or may not become known among the general population.
  • To increase vocabulary by creating a desire to know exactly what a particular word means and how it relates to what is occurring.
  • To demonstrate the opportunities available by learning how to effectively navigate unfamiliar territory through education.
  • To honor the "community/home" language of the speaker and to realize s/he may be articulate within that language. To, thereby, foster a willingness in the person to adopt other ways of speaking while retaining his or her present mode of speech -- if needed and desired.
  • To become respectful and tolerant of the differences in others. To focus on the commonalities between self and others.
  • To foster self-respect, self-determination and self-reliance.
  • To learn how to constructively debate over preferences and beliefs.
  • To learn to be empathetic towards another's problems.
  • To work together for the greater good.
  • To feel hopeful about the future.

                                                                                                                                                                                                              Thick As
You Wuz My Man
We always ran
Tugetha
Birds of a featha
Spoke witout soun
Had each otha back
Then you went off
On anotha track
I get sick
When I see you
All the time
You gotta do
Havetuh use a phone
Pane too thick

Note: Thick As ...I see these two as boys although in black language, 'man' is used the same way as 'guys' or 'dude' or what  can also be considered asexual terms such as 'sweetheart', etc. The two were "thick as". However, the expected noun implies one of them actually becomes a thief. The other person feels ill - pain - when visiting his friend in prison. They now have to communicate verbally through a phone because the window - pane - is too thick.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     WARNING: To those who are sticklers for ONLY using standard (American) English: All of the books inThe YoungStar Series demonstrate the code-switching that blends Black language - used throughout the world - with standard English.I am not encouraging youth to use colloquial language when the standard is expected or needed because of the bias and prejudice it may cause. However, I do explain to them there is no shame in using what may be their first or home language when expected or needed such as being able to effectively communicate in their community milieu. To chastise and demean them for doing so is tantamount to disrespecting their intelligence, family and ability. This is what is turning some youth against learning, using and respecting standard English.

ATTENTION PLEASE!
I have no control over what books areshown on the pages featuring my books for youth. "Urban" literature hascome to mean adult reading that leans toward writing I feel is not thetype I would suggest toward a young audience. A lot of it seems to haveno real value other than getting some youth more interested in reading.~Karen E. Dabney

From the Inside Flap:

My Child

is my hope.
I keep him safe from dope.
I hug him every day.
And bless him when I pray.
He's growing very strong,
and he knows right from wrong.
He is great company.
I raise him to be free.

Note: My Child. "I". Is the father involved? This parent - I see as a mother (She is Malcolm's mother in my novel The Magic Pencil who writes poems on occasion.) - is not only expressing her love for her son but also is preparing him to be a man as best she knows how. A discussion about single parenting and how it can be counter-productive for a single mother to parent either a boy or girl on her own will be lively. In society, the black mother is usually vilified and deemed emasculating to a male child and too hard on a female child who is considered doomed to repeat the cycle.
A black man/child is a hero for only doing what a father should do and is held in much esteem if he is raising children alone. One does not hear much about the effect the lack of an involved female parent would have and she is usually thought of as undesirable. I believe most feel something must really be wrong with a mother who doesn't live with her children. The situation is considered unnatural and extremely harmful by most societies. Fathers are just as important as to how their children experience life but are not held to as high a standard as the mothers, it seems.
